Lazarus
By J.A. Hallam
When you’re old enough to know
that a longer life
isn’t always a better one,
You will have,
Finally,
Become tired
Of the struggle, and
Tired of losing everyone
That has ever mattered.
You will have been forced
As they wither away
Their weak bodies
And weak minds
Bringing them all to a sudden
Stop.
And knowing that
As you look on,
In your pristine condition,
You can do exactly
Nothing to help them.
Immortality
Is a curse,
Not a blessing. You will
Watch it all turn
To dust.
When you live long enough,
Lazarus,
the only uncertainty left
is how long it will be
before you are alone
again.
